Webcomics: love them or hate them
Liefde en haat liggen soms dicht bij elkaar. Zo rond Valentijnsdag is het toepasselijk om die uitersten eens te belichten als het om webcomics gaat. Dit fenomeen roept immers in hoofdzaak extreme reacties op. Webcomics, you love them or you hate them.
In het ene kamp heb je de believers, oftewel zij die het medium blind steunen, misschien uit recalcitrantie of pure nerdiness. In het andere kamp heb je de veelal conservatieve sceptici, die webcomics zien als een gemankeerde vorm van stripmaken voor hen die er nooit in zullen slagen om een printcontract af te dwingen. De realiteit, die ik als verslaggever annex recensent probeer vast te leggen, ligt ergens in het midden, maar daar hebben de believers en non-believers geen boodschap aan.
Ik moest hier aan denken toen Valentijnsdag was aangebroken en ik die dag bij DigitalStrips.com op een loflied stuitte, gericht aan webcomics in het algemeen. “You’re the perfect form of entertainment, and I love you,” schrijft The Geek op dit blog voor webcomicfanaten. Goed, zijn hele ‘liefdesbrief’ is zwaar overdreven, maar wel degelijk gestoeld op zijn passie voor het medium.
Hoe anders is de blogrecensie die ene Deadside Legion enkele dagen eerder schreef op zijn eigen Live Journal. Ook daar stuitte ik per toeval op (of eigenlijk deed René van Densen dat). “It's a rather well-known fact that most webcomics are utter shit,” schrijft Deadside Legion. “We'll start with Penny Arcade. Two overweight dudes draw themselves as thin and ‘star’ in what amounts to a goddamn internet blog. There's really nothing funny about two over-opinionated gamer assholes who present their skewed, misguided opinions as ‘fact’. I don't care if they hate Jack Thompson, I don't care if they give to a charity. They're still assholes and their comic is still shit.”
Het blijft niet bij Penny Arcade alleen. “Of course, we have Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which is the same crap with a new title. Then there's Shortpacked!, an unfunny strip about toy collecting. That's not funny. (...) The strip is funny, simply because these people deserve to be laughed at because they think their behavior is cool. And again, the strip is drawn by an unfunny, over-opinionated asshole who stars in his own strip, draws himself ‘idealized’ and presents his shitty opinions as ‘fact’.”
Dat is al niet heel aardig, maar Deadside Legion draaft nog wat verder door: “And of course these unfunny comics have fans because they manage to appeal to people who are even more pathetic and stupid than their brain-dead writers. Then these artists sell drawing on eBay. Yeah, they spend 30 seconds on a shitty pencil drawing, stick it on eBay like it's a fucking Picasso, and some asshole fan pays a fortune to own it. Geez, I must be the asshole here, I actually work for a living. These artists need to admit that they are hacks who are taking advantage of the stupid.”
Wat zit deze blogger dan zo dwars aan webcomics? Simpel: de meeste zijn identiek getekend. “I gotta wonder if Gabe, Tycho, and ItsWalky are really three separate names for one dude. Same shitty art, same shitty computer coloring in all these strips. Same shitty unfunny stories to boot.”
Gelukkig vindt deze jonge mopperaar twee webcomics toch nog echt de moeite waard: The Perry Bible Fellowship (die wij al eens bespraken op deze plek) en Cyanide & Happiness. Over deze tweede schrijft hij: “A simple stick cartoon which throws out the blogging or meaningless political messages in favor of being purely offensive. In an era where South Park is bland, C&H has been miles past the line since it started and hasn't stepped back. The artists do not mind admitting their drawings are simple or even recycled. Unlike ItsWalky, these guys draw for fun and not out of a need to inflate their worthless egos. A sign which is topped by their willingness to let people hotlink their comics anywhere while most webcomcis think their art is sacred and must only be viewed on the main website. Nevermind that these stick men display more emotion than anything Penny Arcade churns out.”
Liefde en haat, het komt beide naadloos samen in die ene bespreking van Deadside Legion. Toch lijkt zijn waardering voor Cyanide & Happiness nogal willekeurig, want er zijn veel meer scherpe webcomics die in een minimalistische tekenstijl zijn weergegeven. Nee, om de liefde voor webcomics uit te dragen, kun je beter terecht bij The Geek. Laat ik ter afsluiting zijn liefdesbrief op DigitalStrips.com gewoon lekker integraal citeren. Gewoon, vanwege het naijleffect van Valentijn.

I love the way you interact with your fans, be it letting them write your punch lines some times or decide who will win a race, I like how you reward loyalty with voting incentives, bonus strips and wall papers, all for free. You manage to give so much of your self and still not be slutty. It’s awesome.
I love how you make me feel when I’m with you. You make me laugh at your jokes. You can create a whole new world for me to explore and you help me see the humor in real life. But you also show the sadness that can be found. The best is when you do both at the same time.
Not only are you amazing, but your brought so many great friends into my life. People I can’t imagine living without. Thank you so much for introducing us. You’re random, you’re philosophical, you’re cute and you’re smart, all without forcing anything on me. You’re the perfect form of entertainment, and I love you. I’m with you until the end, or until I lose my connection.”

Jeroen publiceert weer eens op Clickburg!  Interessante opsomming Jeroen, al had ik ook nog graag gelezen van welke webcomic jouw hart tegenwoordig nog sneller gaat kloppen (om nog maar ff in Valentijnstaal te blijven).

*zucht* Hoe vreemd het ook is om van mij een verdediging van webcomics te verwachten, moet ik toch IETS zeggen over dat stuk van Deadside Legion.
Hij beticht Penny Arcade en ook Shortpacked ervan dat ze meningen als feit tonen, maar wat doet dat joch hier zelf dan?
Het enige wat ik hier lees is "Deze strip is stom omdat ik hem niet leuk vind!"
Verder gelooft hij er volgens mij grondig in dat zijn dertienjarige buurjongen gelijk heeft als hij zegt dat als je maar genoeg vloekt en scheld, mensen wel naar je luisteren*.
Sorry Jeroen, maar ik zie niet echt in wat het nu van dit stukje tekst is, want als je alle lofzangen en al het gal dat over Webcomics wordt gezongen danwel gespuugd, dan blijf je wel even een tijdje bezig, en al helemaal als je teksten neemt die zoveel nuance als een flatgebouw in de woestijn heeft.
Al met al komt het joch over als een bitter en jaloers kind dat het gemeen vind dat zijn strip(heeft ie een strip?) niet populair is.
Een kleine blik op zijn Livejournal toont me niet veel meer dan wat ik vermoed; het vroege leven van die ouwe vent die je bal afpakte als hij te dicht bij zijn tuin kwam.
*Nou ja, blijkbaar wel - zijn post wordt toch maar op het enige forum van de vereniging voor webcomics ge-crosspost.

@ Michael: Dit was voor de afwisseling eens een review over de zeer uiteenlopende meningen over webcomics. The Geek overdrijft bewust zijn idolatie voor het medium, terwijl Deadside Legion doordraaft in zijn kritiek.
@ Jaap: Je hebt gelijk dat Deadside Legion een zure balafpakker is. Toch vond ik zijn betoog boeiend. Waarom? Omdat het scherp geschreven is en lekker polariseert. Maar ook omdat hij aanvankelijk zo'n typische webcomic-hater lijkt, maar toch zo zijn favorieten blijkt te hebben. Het is dus niet iemand dat het hele medium ruk vindt, want die mensen heb ik al te vaak gehoord.
Ik hoop dat dit de discussie voedt over wat webcomics goed maakt, en wat niet.

Nee hij vindt de populaire strips niet leuk. Wow, dat komt weinig voor - iemand die dingen niet leuk vind omdat het populair is.

Mike Krahulik -Gabe van PA- is vrij skinny. Absoluut niet overweight dus. Ik ga er vanuit dat de meningen van de persoon die schreef dat ze overweight zijn toch vooral van een onjuist beeld in zijn hoofd is uitgegaan. Wellicht een stereotype? Ik vind het cynische nonsens die hij brabbelt. Een verzadiging van vitriool dat hij eventjes rond wil spuien. Bah.
